Stick a scarf round your throat and a vodka down your neck (or vice versa) and you'll be ready to hear Wot I Think of Graviteam's latest Eastern Front wargame. Why is it so fffffffffflippin (it also works with 'f's) cold? I blame greedy British energy companies and the bitter Siberian wind that has been gusting from my monitor all week. Westport: Greenwood Press, 2001.Did you know that by counting the number of 'R's in a cold person's 'BRRRRRRRRRR!' you can tell the temperature of their surroundings? My 'BRRRRRRRRRR!' for instance, indicates my room is currently -10C. The Panzer Legions: A Guide to the German Army Tank Divisions of World War II and Their Commanders. by Allan Millett and Williamson Murray, (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010) Messerschmidt, Manfred, ‘German Military Effectiveness between 19’, in Military Effectiveness: Volume 2, The Interwar Period, ed. Heinemann, W., ‘The Development of German Armoured Forces, 1918-40’, in Armoured Warfare, ed. by Constantine Fitzgibbon (London: Penguin, 2009) - I do urge caution with this book, as they are Guderian's memoirs, and moreover were written partially influenced by Basil Liddell Hart, an already controversial scholar on tank warfare. by Christopher Duffy (London: Cassell, 1999) Guderian, Heinz, Achtung – Panzer!: The Development of Tank Warfare, trans. Guderian was to hold this position until 21 July 1944, when he was appointed Chief of Staff to the Army by Hitler, and would eventually surrender to the Allies in May 1945, and in the aftermath of the war would advise on rebuilding the German Bundeswehr. In particular, Guderian sought to limit the proliferation of various tank designs in favour of streamlining production to aid in rebuilding Germany's tank strength. Guderian would eventually be recalled to service in 1943, as Inspector-General of Armoured troops, in order to help rebuild the much depleted Panzerwaffe, which had suffered increasing losses in both North Africa, and on the Eastern Front. Guderian would then go on to command Panzergruppe 2 'Guderian' during the invasion of Russia in 1941, but despite success during the initial invasion, disagreements with his commander, Von Kluge, during the Siege of Moscow in December would see Guderian removed from his command. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Guderian commanded first the XIX Corps (1 Panzer and 2 Motorised Divisions) during the Invasion of Poland, and then again during the Invasion of France in 1940, his rapid tank advance through the Ardennes earning him the nickname 'Schnelle Heinz'. This book, known as Achtung-Panzer!, laid out a framework for the employment of panzer divisions within the German army, as a hard-hitting mechanised force, and this view was keenly taken up by the Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, whose personal interest in technological solutions to military problems is well-documented.

Joining the Truppenamt (a covert name for the the General Staff, which had been banned under the Versailles treaty), Guderian later transferred to the Inspectorate of Motorised Troops, where he became Chief of Staff to General Lutz, who asked him to write a pamphlet advocating for the use of mechanised formations in the German army. A signals officer during World War One, Guderian was retained by the Reichswehr during the interwar period, where he developed an interest in the potential of tanks and armoured forces. As far as I can tell, that looks to be Colonel-General Heinz Guderian, a man often credited as the 'father of blitzkrieg', and most certainly present at the Battle of Moscow.
